When I asked a business owner about their vision, they rarely think big enough. They have a vision for the next few months but rarely further than that but why not?
Think big! You vision, and therefore your business plan, should go out to 1 year, 3 years and 5 years and even beyond. What is it you really want? What do you want your day to look like?
I said a couple of years ago that I wanted a view of the sea when I wake up and a business that I can run from a coffee shop anywhere in the world. Sounds crazy and I didn’t really know how I was going to achieve it at the time. Now I live in Whitstable with a view of the sea from my window and I have a business which I run from my laptop wherever I happen to be!
They say that if you aren’t specific about what you want, then you won’t get it. Whether you believe this or not, the clearer you are about what you want, the easier it is to plan your strategy so that you get as close to it or possible, or even achieve it.
Once you know where you’re heading, it’s much easier to work out the steps you need to take to get there.
Work backwards so that you have stepping stones to reach along the way. Once you know what you need to do on a daily basis, you will start to make progress. Your journey probably won’t take you directly to your big vision and you may wander off the path a few times but analyse every opportunity and ask yourself if it’s taking you closer or further away from your main goal. This will help you decide which opportunities to accept and which to reject.
Business owners often think that they have to accept every opportunity that comes their way. They don’t! Everything is a choice and you can make the choice that works for you. Remember your vision and how it will affect that.
Everything we do in life is a choice and your business is no different. If things aren’t working out as you imagined, have a look and see what you could do differently. Just because something has always been done that way, doesn’t mean you can’t change.
Think big, enjoy the journey and make the choices that work for you.
