As a business owner, it’s easy to get side-tracked and be so focussed on the business that we forget why we are doing what we do!
Opportunities come our way and they sound great but are they really? Do they take you closer to your big goal or are they just another shiny object to distract you from what you should be doing?
An opportunity should take you closer to your big goal or vision, not further away. Sometimes when you’re caught up in the excitement, it’s difficult to be impartial about it and take the emotion out so that you see the opportunity for what it really is.
Referring back to your original business plan will help you with that decision. What did you put in your plan for the current year? What do you want to achieve? It might be financial or it might be based on performance but both need to be considered in the light of your main goal and your plan for the current year and beyond.
We are all bombarded every day with new opportunities, clients who are sort of OK but maybe not ideal as well as just the everyday activities we are involved in.
How easy is it to get distracted? It happens to all of us and really we need to focus on the job at hand, make a success of it and then maybe expand our horizons a little, bring in new services, new products and new opportunities.
I had lunch with a client recently and we discussed his business. What he is doing is great but the balance isn’t right so he is struggling. Which areas of your business bring you the most money? Those are the areas you should be focussing on initially until your finances are stable, your bills are covered and you are able to give a little more time to the other areas of your business which are “nice to do” but not necessarily the ones that drive your business.
Having someone look at your business from the outside in is often the best way forward. We all get so involved in our business that we don’t see the wood for the trees. Having an independent view, however harsh that might be at times, helps to refocus on what’s important rather what you like or want to be doing.
If a one-off strategy session would help you to focus, I’d love to have a chat with you and see where I can add value and help you move forward. You can book a FREE 30 minute session and get an idea of how I could help here.
